Dear Hiring Manager,

I am very interested in the job as a data scientist. I am currently enrolled at George Mason University, pursuing a Master’s degree of Statistic Science. As an international student in America, I hope to begin my career in a professional company. Thus, based on my academic background and interest, I would like to apply for the Data Scientist in Econ& Fin Modeling Assoc. I noticed that the qualifications to apply this job is having Bachelor’s degree of Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, Finance or or Master’s Degree in corresponding fields. Actually, I have achieved my Bachelor’s Degree of Finance Mathematics in Capital University of Economics and Business in China. In addition, I have an internship experience in Investment Department of Nobel Fund Management. During the internship period, I was assigned to do the work for data collection, data statistics, data analysis, industry research, and valuation modeling. This internship provides me a great opportunity to know well about this industry and gives me a chance to improve my skills and knowledge.

My value to the company can be demonstrated by my capability of building model and my previous achievement. I participate in the project of Student Research Training back in college. The research topic of our team was “The Relationship Between Domestic Oil Price and International Oil Price” and I am the group leader. I lead the team members to collect data and then build models to analysis data. After we submitted the proposal,we were titled to one of the key projects. By attending this project, I learned how to collect data accurately and how to choose right model to analyze large, messy data. I got familiar with the research steps. In addition, for analyzing these data, I learned R, SAS and SPSS which are statistic software. I believe that what I have learned from this experience enhanced my ability and I can deal with data by myself now.

My focus is to use statistic software such as R, SAS and SPSS to analyze data and enjoy trying out researching new approaches and programming languages. I can create rich data visualizations to present complex ideas for management. I also had taken finance courses in my undergraduate study, and I am more familiar with the economic and finance data than others who only study statistics. At the same time, I am a highly motivated person who likes to learn new things. I am very excited that I matched your job’s requirements. It will be my pleasure to be a part of your company. My resume provides more details of myself. Thank you for taking time to review my letter. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

If you have any question, please feel free to send me an email at yguo14@masonlive.gmu.edu or give me a call at 202-394-8962.
